Milestone

In March 2011 I was blessed to read the book
One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are
by Ann Voskamp

I don't know if you have heard of, or even read this sure-to-be classic book, but if you have, you know that it is not an easy read.
The author's life has not been an easy one, nor are the principles set forth in this book-about having gratitude and thankfulness no matter what your circumstances.
The author asks hard questions, and addresses the difficulties in life, while drawing us
to the conclusion that we are to imitate the life of Christ --and be full of gratitude in every thing.

This soul searching book which basis it's principles on scripture, shows us how we can
experience a life of JOY!

The book encourages us to start making a list of gratitude--actually 1,000 of them!
Today, I reached my 1,000th entry!
I chose God's Grace Gifts as the name of my list

What I didn't know when I started this, was how much my life was going to change during this time.
I didn't know that some of the hardest days of my life were going to be faced as I was writing this list.
I didn't know that I would face cancer, financial struggles, & a potentially debilitating illness.
But, God did.

What a perfect time to search my heart daily for gratitude.
For the blessings of that day.
Some days I just was happy to be drawing my next breath--so, I listed that.

This was such an excellent tool to train my heart to look constantly for things that bring joy.
(even on the days I was in pain, or afraid)
I learned to look more closely at the blessings that surround me constantly-that I might have otherwise overlooked!

A Butterfly
Tiny Violets
Motherhood
A smile from a stranger
An unexpected kindness

God's thumbprint on all of His Creation cries out His glory!
This journal helps me to see it--and note it!

I intend to keep on adding to my journal, and hope that I will continue to
cultivate a spirit of thankfulness and gratitude to God.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him,
 and bless his name.Psalm 100:4

Disguised Blessing...

“Blessings sometimes show up in unrecognizable disguises. ”
~
Janette Oke
I have been in the mood for reading recently-mostly due to having to rest more with
this illness. I realized today that it truly is a blessing to do it! (whatever the reason)
I get my work done in the morning, and read in the afternoon...
(helps me work faster knowing the rest period is coming!)
I have been reading a mix of books, some of them for research, and some for fun.
For fun right now I am reading through Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series.
I have read it several times, but love them so!
I was thinking about what I love about them today...
I love the characters--they are so real I can almost picture them
I love the lifestyle they lived--although hard work, they spent a lot of family time together
Also, I love Marty in her homemaker role!
I love the spiritual emphasis of course, and the way the lived out their faith daily
I find them inspiring, and something to encourage me!
What are you reading these days?

Winter Pastime

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I love all 4 seasons that we enjoy here in Delaware...
Even the winter time!
Some people dread it, but not me! When I think of winter, I think of cozy days (or nights) by the fire, beautiful white snow, and extra time for reading!

A friend mentioned the book Living Water to Phil and I over dinner one night last week.
I ordered it from the library, opened it today and read some of it--then, read some of it to Phil....
and now we're thinking that we may just read it aloud as a family.

The few passages I read were very moving and convicting.
They addressed the lack of repentance being preached in churches today...and the lack of truly
dying to self and giving our entire lives over the the Lord.

I think this will be a difficult read (ouch) but, a much needed one.
Have you read this book? I'd love to hear your feedback if you have.
And, I'd love to hear what you're currently reading!

Blessings to you and yours!

Great New Parenting Resource!

In this second book from the Duggars, they focus on the principles that equip them to face life’s challenges—drawing from their most recent challenge with the 3-month premature birth of their newest child, Josie. They also share the new challenges their older children are facing as they prepare for adult life. Central to the book is a section on the principles that the Duggars have consistently taught their children. These simply worded principles are basic to the Duggar family and are shared in a way that other parents can incorporate in their own homes. A special chapter on homeschooling gives valuable information to parents who are considering this route or are already invested in it. The world continues to be amazed by their nineteen well-groomed, well-behaved, well-schooled children and their home life, which focuses on family, financial responsibility, fun—and must importantly, faith. The Duggars show how parents can succeed whether they’re rearing a single child or several
